All four components are required
IDP's terms and declaration say that you must attend all four test components to receive an IELTS test result, and if you do not attend all four you will not receive one. Exceptions are possible but must be requested at registration with written approval from the centre. The usual approved exception is an exemption for a disability, covered in our access arrangements guide.
What you can do
IDP Australia treats missing your test, or part of it, without telling the centre as non-attendance with no refund; with valid evidence of serious illness or an emergency, you can submit it within 14 days to request a transfer (IDP Australia). IDP India treats a candidate who fails to appear as absent with no refund, and considers special circumstances only through its transfer and cancellation form (IDP India FAQ).
| Situation | Likely outcome |
|---|---|
| Missed Speaking, no notice, no evidence | No result and no refund (non-attendance) |
| Missed Speaking through serious illness, with evidence | Possible transfer under local rules (e.g. IDP Australia: evidence within 14 days) |
| Exemption approved at registration | Result issued without that component |
| Already have an IELTS on computer result and want a better Speaking score | IELTS One Skill Retake, where offered |

Global special consideration
ielts.org says that if illness, injury, bereavement or another exceptional event outside your control stops you attending, and you no longer qualify for a standard cancellation or transfer, you can apply to your test centre for special consideration (ielts.org). Detailed rules are set locally and can differ by country and test centre, so check your booking confirmation or ask your centre if anything here does not match what you were told.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an IELTS score without the Speaking test?+
Only with an exemption approved by the centre at registration. Otherwise all four components are required.
Can I retake only the Speaking test if I missed it?+
One Skill Retake is for IELTS on computer test takers within 60 days of the original test, and no result is issued without all four components. Ask your centre what applies to you.
Do I get a refund if I miss IELTS Speaking?+
Usually not. IDP Australia and IDP India both treat non-attendance without valid evidence as non-refundable.
How long do I have to send medical evidence?+
IDP Australia says 14 days for a transfer request. Other countries set their own deadlines.
