I would like to talk about a stunning coastal promenade in a town called Sitges, which is just a short train ride south of Barcelona. I went there a couple of summers ago with a close friend during a break from university, and the whole stretch of seafront completely blew me away.
The promenade itself extends along the coastline for a couple of kilometres, flanked on one side by tall, swaying palm trees and on the other by a wide, golden beach. What really catches your eye is the row of elegant whitewashed buildings facing the water, interspersed with vibrant outdoor cafés and independent boutique shops. Every few hundred metres, there are artisan ice-cream parlours displaying mounds of colourful gelato. The scent of freshly baked waffle cones drifting through the warm air was absolutely irresistible.
It is an incredibly animated spot throughout the day. In the afternoon, you see rollerbladers gliding along the smooth stone pavement, families pushing prams, and sunbathers popping across from the sand to grab a refreshing cold drink. Towards late evening, the mood shifts as locals and tourists alike come out for a leisurely stroll, stopping to listen to buskers or to sit outside on terraces enjoying tapas while the sun dips below the horizon.
I think what made it so memorable was the wonderful laid-back atmosphere. Even though it was bustling, it never felt frantic or chaotic. Sitting on a low stone wall with a tub of pistachio ice cream, feeling the gentle sea breeze and watching the waves roll in, made all the stress of everyday life just melt away.
