Band 8 model answer

Band 8256 words, about two minutes at a natural pace. Details are invented; use your own.

I'd like to talk about my close friend Clara, who is an incredibly passionate writer. We met during our first year at university while living in the same student flat, and we've stayed in touch ever since. She works in marketing during the day, but her real love has always been creative writing.

Clara mainly writes short speculative fiction stories, alongside a personal travel and lifestyle blog. On her blog, she shares reflections about modern city life, book reviews, and sometimes short poems that capture fleeting everyday moments. Her fictional stories, though, are where she really shines; they are usually atmospheric, character-driven pieces that explore themes like human connection and memory.

Writing is very much woven into her daily routine. As far as I know, she sets aside at least an hour every evening, usually after dinner with a cup of tea, to work on her drafts. Even when she has a hectic schedule at work, she carries a small notebook in her bag to jot down snippets of dialogue, plot ideas, or random observations while commuting on the train.

I think she loves writing because it serves as an essential creative outlet. Her day job involves producing quite formulaic commercial copy, so writing fiction gives her complete creative freedom. To her, building fictional worlds from scratch is a form of escapism, but it's also a way to process her own feelings and make sense of the world around her. She finds immense satisfaction in crafting a story that evokes a genuine emotional response in others.
