Goldthorpe Summer Show Safety Guide for Event Staff
Skip to the questions ↓Introduction
The Goldthorpe Summer Show attracts around 20,000 visitors over three days, and the safety of the public and our team is our first priority. This guide applies to all paid staff working at the showground, including car park attendants, stewards, ticket sellers and site crew. Volunteers receive a separate, shorter guide. Please read it carefully before your first shift and keep it with you while you are on duty. Anyone who has not received a copy should ask for one at the staff tent.
Before your shift
Report to the staff tent next to the main gate at least thirty minutes before your shift starts. Here you will sign in, collect a radio and receive a short briefing from the duty safety officer about any changes to the site layout. You must wear the orange staff jacket at all times while on the showground, even in hot weather, so that visitors and emergency services can identify you quickly.
Weather
As most of the work takes place outdoors, you should dress for all conditions and bring waterproof clothing. On hot days, drinking water is available free of charge at the staff tent, and you should take a short rest in the shade at least once an hour. If thunderstorms are forecast, the safety officer may close the high-level areas, such as the viewing platform, and all staff will be informed by radio.
Vehicles on site
Delivery vehicles are only permitted to enter the showground before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m. If you see a vehicle moving at other times, report it to the safety officer by radio. Site crew who drive buggies around the showground must not exceed walking pace in public areas and must never carry passengers who are not members of staff.
Lost children
If a child tells you they have lost their parents, stay with the child in a visible place and call the information point by radio. Do not take the child anywhere yourself unless you are asked to do so by the information point. Never give a child's name over the radio; use the code word Bluebell instead, followed by a short description of the child's clothing.
Emergencies
In the event of an emergency, you will hear three long blasts on the public address system. Stop what you are doing, direct visitors calmly towards the nearest exit and do not allow anyone to return to their car. Once your area is clear, go to the staff assembly point at the north gate, where the safety officer will check that all staff are present. First aid posts are marked by a green flag.
