Porthaven Foodstores New Staff Induction Week
Skip to the questions ↓Welcome
Congratulations on joining Porthaven Foodstores. Every new member of staff, whether full-time or part-time, completes an induction week before working their normal shifts. The aim is to make sure you feel confident in the store and understand how we look after our customers and each other. Your induction will be led by a trained colleague from your own store, who will also be your first point of contact for questions during your first three months. Please read the staff handbook, which will be emailed to you, before your first day.
Day one
On your first morning, please report to the customer service desk at 8.30 a.m. and bring your bank details and proof of your right to work in the UK. You will be given a tour of the store, including the warehouse, the staff room and the fire exits. In the afternoon you will collect your uniform and your staff card, which allows you to clock in and out and gives you a ten per cent discount on most purchases.
Days two and three
These days are spent on the shop floor. You will learn how to fill shelves so that older products are sold first, how to check date labels and how to deal with damaged stock. You will also spend time at the tills with an experienced cashier. You will not be expected to work on a till alone until you have completed at least four supervised shifts.
Day four
The fourth day is set aside for compulsory safety training. Topics include lifting boxes correctly, using a cage trolley and cleaning up spillages. Staff who will work in the bakery or on the fresh food counters will also receive food hygiene training on this day. Short quizzes are used to check understanding, and you may repeat any section until you are confident.
Day five
On the final day you will work a normal shift alongside your induction trainer. At the end of the shift you will meet your department manager to discuss which tasks you have enjoyed and any areas where you would like further support. Together you will agree the hours you will work for the next month, which will be shown on the rota in the staff room.
Things to remember
Mobile phones may only be used in the staff room or during breaks. Jewellery should be kept to a plain ring and small earrings, and long hair must be tied back on the food counters. If you are going to be late or unable to attend any part of your induction, telephone the customer service desk as early as possible.
