Band 8 sample letter
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to formally express my strong opposition to the recently announced plans to construct an international airport on the outskirts of our residential district. I became aware of this proposal through a public notice posted on the community centre board last Tuesday, which detailed the intended land acquisition for the project.
My primary concern involves the inevitable degradation of our living environment. The projected flight paths will undoubtedly subject our quiet neighbourhood to persistent noise pollution, severely disrupting the peace of local families. Furthermore, the massive increase in heavy goods traffic required to service the facility will lead to dangerous levels of congestion on our narrow local roads, posing a significant safety risk to pedestrians and schoolchildren.
Rather than proceeding with this development, I urge the council to consider alternative sites that are located further away from densely populated zones. Should the project be deemed essential, I propose the implementation of mandatory strict curfews on night-time flights and the construction of a dedicated bypass road to divert airport-bound traffic away from our residential streets.
I trust you will take these serious concerns into account before finalising any decisions regarding this development.
Yours faithfully,
Arthur Pendelton

Why this scores well
A Band 8 response fully addresses all three bullet points with a coherent, logical flow and a consistently formal tone appropriate for an authority. A common Band 6 mistake is failing to provide specific, realistic solutions, instead offering vague suggestions like 'please stop the project' without considering the context of the authority's role.
- Write to an organisation or someone you do not know: open with Dear Sir or Madam, close with Yours faithfully.
- If you know the person's surname, use Dear Mr or Ms and close with Yours sincerely.
