Questions and Band 8 answers

1

Why do some people prefer entertaining guests at home rather than going to restaurants?

I think hosting at home offers a degree of intimacy that commercial venues simply cannot replicate. When you invite people into your personal living space, the atmosphere tends to be far more relaxed, and you are not constrained by restaurant booking times or noisy surroundings. For instance, families can linger over a home-cooked dinner for hours without feeling rushed. Having said that, it does require a massive amount of effort, which deters people who lack the time or culinary confidence.

2

How have home cooking traditions changed across generations in your country?

Historically, domestic cooking was centred around regional heritage and recipes handed down verbally, with people preparing labour-intensive dishes every single day. In contrast, the younger generation today leans towards quicker, more globally influenced meals, largely inspired by international cuisine they discover online. For example, stir-fries and pasta dishes are now household staples alongside traditional stews. Nevertheless, many classic dishes are still preserved for major festive holidays, even if daily routines have shifted towards convenience.

3

What factors encourage people to learn advanced culinary skills nowadays?

A major catalyst is the widespread accessibility of digital food media and cooking shows, which have transformed cooking from a mundane chore into a creative hobby. People now see culinary expertise as a form of self-expression. For instance, short video tutorials make sophisticated techniques, like bread baking or knife skills, accessible to amateurs. However, financial considerations also play a role, as cooking gourmet meals at home is significantly more economical than dining out regularly at high-end establishments.

4

Do you think ready-made convenience meals will eventually replace traditional home cooking?

It seems unlikely that convenience meals will completely eradicate home cooking, though they certainly dominate busy weekdays. While ready meals cater to fast-paced lifestyles, cooking from scratch fulfils a social and emotional need that pre-packaged items cannot satisfy. For example, preparing a meal for family often acts as a ritual of care and relaxation. Therefore, although consumption of pre-made options will probably expand, traditional cooking will persist as a leisure pursuit and cultural practice on weekends.

5

What are the advantages and drawbacks of hosting large gatherings at home?

The primary benefit of hosting a large gathering at home is affordability and complete autonomy over the menu, music, and timetable. It allows hosts to customise the whole occasion to suit their guests' preferences. Conversely, the main downside is the immense physical and mental burden of logistics, catering, and cleaning up afterwards. If a host has limited space, a large group can quickly become overwhelming, potentially detracting from their own enjoyment of the event.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Part 3 answer be?+

Usually four to six sentences, or 30 to 60 seconds. Give a clear view, a reason, an example and, where it fits, a limit or an exception. The examiner will interrupt if you go on too long, which is normal.

Does Part 3 follow the cue card?+

Yes. Part 3 takes the theme of your Part 2 card and makes it abstract: society, comparisons, causes and the future. These questions follow the card "Describe a time you cooked a meal for guests".

Can I say I don't know?+

You can say you haven't thought about it much, but then give your best guess with a reason. Examiners score your language, not your knowledge.
