Band 8 sample answer

The provided diagrams illustrate the contrasting spatial arrangements of a typical Japanese office and a typical American office. Overall, the Japanese layout emphasises a communal, open-plan environment, while the American design prioritises individual privacy and specialised functional areas.

In the Japanese office, the layout is centralised and hierarchical. The Department Manager occupies a prominent position at the top, directly facing the staff. Below them, two Section Managers are positioned at the head of two large, rectangular blocks of desks where employees sit facing one another. This configuration facilitates constant communication and collective oversight. The windows are located along the top wall, providing natural light to the entire open space.

Conversely, the American office is structured with a focus on segregation. The right side of the floor plan is occupied by three private offices for the Department Manager and two Section Managers. The central area contains eight individual cubicles arranged in two rows. Furthermore, the left side of the office is partitioned into distinct functional zones, including a printer and copier area, storage space, and two separate conference rooms. Unlike the Japanese model, the windows in this office are situated along the right wall, adjacent to the private offices.
