A diagram illustrating the lifecycle of uranium in nuclear power production

The diagram below shows how uranium is used in the production of nuclear power.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

The production of nuclear power using uranium
  1. 1.Uranium is mined from the earth
  2. 2.Uranium ore is converted and enriched to make U-235 fuel pellets
  3. 3.U-235 fuel powers generators to make electricity
  4. 4.After about four years, fuel becomes spent and is removed
  5. 5.Some spent fuel can be re-processed and re-used
  6. 6.Spent fuel that cannot be reprocessed is stored in containers and buried

Band 8 sample answer

The provided diagram illustrates the six-stage lifecycle of uranium as it is utilised for the generation of nuclear power. Overall, the process is cyclical in nature, involving extraction, refinement, energy production, and a final decision-making phase regarding the disposal or recycling of spent materials.

In the initial stages, uranium is mined from the earth and subsequently converted and enriched into U-235 fuel pellets. These pellets are then utilised in the third stage to power generators, which facilitate the production of electricity. Once the fuel has been in operation for a period of approximately four years, it is classified as spent and is removed from the system.

Following this removal, the process branches into two potential pathways. In the fifth stage, a portion of the spent fuel is re-processed and re-used, effectively re-entering the cycle at the power generation phase. Conversely, any fuel that cannot be re-processed undergoes the final stage, where it is securely stored in containers and buried. This systematic approach highlights both the efficiency of recycling nuclear materials and the necessity of managing hazardous waste products that remain after the energy generation process.

Frequently asked questions

What should the overview say?

The process consists of six distinct stages, beginning with the extraction of raw uranium and concluding with either the recycling or the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel.

How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?

At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.

How do I describe process diagrams?

Say how many stages there are and where the process starts and ends. Use the passive and sequencers: first, after this, once, finally. Keep every stage; a missing step costs task achievement.
