A twenty-year study on reasons for UK adults attending arts events

The table illustrates changes in the motivations of UK adults for attending arts events over a twenty-year period. Overall, it is clear that seeing a specific performer or artist remains the primary driver for attendance, whereas the popularity of attending for special occasions has experienced a marked downward trend.

Regarding the most popular reason, the desire to see a specific performer or artist has remained relatively stable. Starting at 58% twenty years ago, the figure dipped slightly to 55% a decade ago before recovering to 56% today. In contrast, the proportion of adults attending for a special occasion or celebration has fallen consistently, dropping from 27% twenty years ago to 20% ten years ago, and finally reaching a low of 9% today.

Conversely, other reasons have seen growth. The percentage of adults attending to accompany children has increased substantially, rising from 9% two decades ago to 24% today. Similarly, attendance for work or business purposes has nearly doubled, growing from 6% twenty years ago to 11% today. While these categories remain less significant than the primary motivation, their upward trajectory highlights a shift in the demographic or purpose of arts attendance in the UK.
