Band 8 sample answer
The two pie charts illustrate the distribution of energy sources for total world consumption and electricity generation during the previous year. Overall, it is evident that fossil fuels remain the dominant energy source in both categories, although their proportional usage varies significantly between total consumption and electricity production.
Regarding total energy consumption, oil is the most significant contributor, accounting for 34.3% of the total, followed by coal at 25.1% and gas at 20.9%. Combustible renewables and waste represent 10.6%, while nuclear energy and hydro power contribute 6.5% and 2.2% respectively. The 'other' category constitutes a negligible 0.4%.
In contrast, electricity generation relies more heavily on coal, which provides 39.8% of the total output. Gas and hydro power are also substantial contributors at 19.6% and 16.1% respectively, while nuclear energy accounts for 15.7%. Oil's contribution to electricity generation is notably lower than its share of total consumption, standing at only 6.7%. Finally, other sources make up 2.1% of electricity generation. Notably, hydro power's share is over seven times higher in electricity generation than in total energy consumption, highlighting its specific application in power grids.

Frequently asked questions
What should the overview say?
While oil is the primary source for total energy consumption, coal dominates the electricity generation sector, and renewable sources play a significantly larger role in electricity production than in total energy use.
How long should an IELTS Task 1 answer be?
At least 150 words; 170 to 200 is the safe range. Spend about 20 minutes on it and leave 40 for Task 2, which carries twice the marks.
How do I describe pie charts?
Name the largest and smallest shares in the overview. Use proportion language: a quarter, just under half, the majority. With two pies, compare the same slice across both.
