Band 8 sample answer

The maps illustrate the development of Langley over a forty-year period, highlighting a shift from industrial infrastructure to a more community-focused urban layout. In 1910, the town was dominated by industrial and railway-related features. A factory occupied the northern section, and railway workers' cottages were situated near the railway line at the bottom of the map. Residential accommodation consisted of townhouses along Jordan Street and rows of houses on Sherman Street. The area also contained significant portions of wasteland and limited commercial facilities, specifically a single store, a laundry, and a café.

By 1950, the town had been completely redeveloped. The factory and railway cottages were removed, replaced by Sherman Mansions and a large green space known as Sherman Park, which included a children's play area and a pond. The residential housing on Jordan Street was replaced by flats, and the commercial sector expanded significantly; while the laundry and café remained, three new stores were established along a newly constructed road called New Lane. Overall, the town transitioned from a utilitarian, industrialised settlement into a residential area prioritising leisure and improved living standards.
