Estimated literacy rates by region and gender between 2000 and 2004

The table illustrates literacy rates across six global regions, categorised by gender, between 2000 and 2004. Overall, it is evident that literacy levels were highest in Europe and lowest in Africa, with males consistently demonstrating higher proficiency than females in every region.

Europe recorded the highest literacy rates, with a total of 98.8%, followed closely by the Americas and Oceania, which stood at 93.6% and 93.4% respectively. In these three regions, the gender gap was relatively narrow. For instance, Europe showed a marginal difference between males (99.2%) and females (98.5%). Similarly, the Americas and Oceania displayed gender disparities of less than 1.5 percentage points.

In contrast, Africa and Asia reported significantly lower literacy figures. Africa had the lowest overall rate at 62.5%, with a notable gender divide; male literacy stood at 71.6%, whereas female literacy was substantially lower at 53.9%. Asia followed a similar pattern, with a total literacy rate of 79.3%. Here, the male literacy rate reached 85.9%, while the female rate lagged behind at 72.5%. Globally, the average literacy rate was 82.2%, with males at 87.2% and females at 77.3%, highlighting a persistent global gender gap in education.
