Band 8 sample answer

The line graph illustrates the total expenditure by overseas visitors in the UK from 1980 to 2010, while the pie charts compare the primary reasons for these visits at the beginning and end of this period.

Overall, spending by overseas visitors experienced a general upward trend between 1980 and 2010, while the primary motivation for travel shifted from holidays towards visiting friends or relatives.

In 1980, expenditure stood at £8,100 million. Despite a dip to £7,000 million in 1982, spending generally climbed, peaking at £12,000 million in 1996. Following this peak, figures fluctuated, dropping to £9,600 million in 2002 before recovering to £11,700 million in 2006. By 2010, spending had moderated to £10,600 million.

Regarding the reasons for visits, holidays remained the most popular choice, though their share declined from 44.1% in 1980 to 39.1% in 2010. Conversely, the proportion of visitors travelling to see friends or relatives saw a significant rise, growing from 18.7% to 28.2%. Business travel also became more common, increasing from 20.7% to 22.8%. In contrast, the 'other' category saw a notable decrease, falling from 16.6% to 9.8% over the thirty-year period.
