Government funding for arts versus public services: discuss both views

The debate regarding whether governments should prioritise public services or allocate funds to the arts is a point of contention. Those who advocate for prioritising public services believe that the state has a moral obligation to provide for the fundamental needs of its citizens. Healthcare, education, and infrastructure are the cornerstones of a stable nation, and any diversion of funds away from these areas could lead to systemic decline. For instance, in many developing countries, directing limited budgets toward hospitals and schools is far more impactful on the average citizen's quality of life than subsidising opera houses or art galleries. Therefore, proponents of this view argue that fiscal responsibility requires meeting basic human needs before indulging in cultural pursuits.

Conversely, supporters of state-funded arts argue that a society is defined not merely by its survival but by its creative and intellectual achievements. The arts play a crucial role in preserving history, fostering national identity, and stimulating tourism, which can eventually provide economic returns. In my view, while public services must remain the primary financial commitment of any government, abandoning the arts would be a grave error. A society that neglects its cultural heritage risks losing its unique character. Therefore, I believe governments should maintain a robust commitment to essential services while providing modest, strategic funding to preserve and promote the arts.
