When citizens consciously reduce their consumption, recycle diligently, and choose sustainable transport options, they exert pressure on markets to provide eco-friendly alternatives. For instance, the widespread adoption of reusable shopping bags and the refusal of single-use plastics by millions of consumers have forced many retailers to overhaul their packaging strategies. Such bottom-up approaches empower citizens and foster a widespread culture of environmental stewardship, ensuring that sustainability becomes a social norm rather than a mere afterthought.

Conversely, those who look to governments point out that systemic issues, such as industrial pollution and carbon emissions, cannot be solved by individual action alone. Only state authorities possess the power to implement policies like carbon taxes, renewable energy subsidies, and stringent waste management laws that dictate how corporations operate.
