The debate regarding whether keeping animals in high-rise apartments is ethical frequently divides opinion. While some argue that confined spaces are inherently detrimental to animal welfare, others maintain that the quality of care is more significant than the size of the living area. Opponents of keeping pets in apartments often highlight the lack of natural stimulation. Animals, particularly energetic dog breeds, require sufficient space to roam and express their natural behaviours. When confined to an apartment, these creatures may suffer from physiological stress or boredom, which can manifest as destructive behaviour or lethargy. For instance, a large breed of dog, such as a Golden Retriever, might struggle to maintain its physical health if it is restricted to a small flat without immediate access to a garden or park, leading to a diminished quality of life.

Conversely, many advocates suggest that an apartment is a suitable environment if the owner is committed to the animal's needs. The emotional bond between a human and a pet often outweighs the physical dimensions of the home. Provided that an owner ensures regular exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent social interaction, the animal can remain healthy and content. A cat, for example, can lead a perfectly fulfilling life in an apartment if the owner provides vertical climbing structures and interactive play, proving that environment is secondary to the quality of engagement.

In my view, keeping pets in apartments is acceptable, provided that the owner understands the specific requirements of their chosen species. While space is a factor, the dedication to providing adequate activity and affection is the true determinant of an animal's wellbeing. Ultimately, as long as the pet's physical and psychological needs are met, the setting of the residence is of secondary importance.
