Hard work versus luck in achieving personal success

I disagree with this perspective, as I believe that while personal dedication is vital, luck remains an undeniable catalyst in achieving significant milestones.

Undoubtedly, hard work forms the bedrock of professional and personal advancement. Individuals who commit themselves to honing their expertise and maintaining discipline are far more likely to produce high-quality results than those who do not. For instance, an athlete who trains rigorously for years will naturally possess a physical advantage over a casual participant. Without this sustained effort, one lacks the competence to capitalise on opportunities when they eventually arise. Thus, industriousness is the engine that drives progress.

However, attributing success exclusively to effort ignores the reality of randomness. Many high achievers benefit from favourable timing, influential networks, or being in the right place at the right moment, factors over which they have no control. Consider a talented entrepreneur whose business succeeds only because a competitor unexpectedly collapses or market trends shift in their favour. Despite their hard work, their breakthrough was facilitated by external conditions that could not have been engineered. Ignoring these variables provides an incomplete view of how success is actually realised.

In summary, while diligent labour is indispensable for personal growth, it is rarely the sole determinant of one's accomplishments.
