When organic refuse is diverted from ordinary landfill sites, it can undergo controlled anaerobic digestion in specialised processing facilities. During this process, microscopic organisms break down kitchen scraps in the complete of oxygen, generating biogas that consists mainly of methane. This energy can be captured to generate renewable electricity or refined into vehicle fuel. Furthermore, the residual material left behind forms a nutrient rich fertiliser that can soil quality on commercial farms. By adopting this sustainable approach, municipalities can greenhouse emissions while producing valuable energy, turning what was once considered useless refuse into a practical and environmental resource for local communities.
