Cast Iron Frame Development
During the nineteenth century, instrument makers incorporated heavy cast iron frames into grand pianos to withstand extreme string tension. Although traditional wooden structures warped under increased load, this metal plate supported thicker wire, yielding a much louder and richer acoustic resonance in large concert halls.
