PTE Respond to a Situation: how to cover every point in the prompt

A polite, fluent Respond to a Situation answer can still lose marks for one missing sentence. Prompts often hide two or three jobs (explain, ask, offer) plus facts like a day or a time, and under the clock learners do the first job well and forget the rest.

How is Respond to a Situation scored? Why every point counts

You read and hear a short everyday situation, then say what you would say to the person in it. Both PTE Academic and PTE Core include the task, and both guides reward an answer that deals with the whole situation, not just its main request.

The three kinds of point in every prompt

Kind of pointWhere it hidesExample
TasksThe verbs: explain, apologise, ask, offer, decline, suggest, remind"explain the problem, apologise and ask for a day pass" = three moves
FactsDays, times, numbers, places, reasonsthis weekend, staff-only bay, trains cancelled
Implied detailsWhat a real message would need, though the prompt does not say itwhen you are free, how to reach you, what you will do next

BandLadder teaching framework, built on the scoring wording above.

Most lost marks come from the first two: a task verb you never acted on, or a fact you changed. The third separates a complete answer from a merely correct one.

FAQ

How do you answer Respond to a Situation in PTE?+

Find the listener, every task verb (explain, ask, offer and so on) and every fact in the prompt, then speak for up to 40 seconds: greet, give your purpose, do each task in your own words, keep the facts exact and close politely.

How is Respond to a Situation scored?+

PTE Academic scores Content (0–6), Pronunciation and Oral Fluency (Score Guide, July 2025, pp. 29–31). PTE Core scores Appropriacy (0–3), Pronunciation and Fluency (Score Guide, January 2026, pp. 29–30).

What happens if I miss a point in Respond to a Situation?+

In PTE Academic, omissions and misinterpretations move a response down the Content scale (pp. 29–30). In PTE Core, the top Appropriacy band asks for an appropriate level of detail (p. 30), and Pearson's sample comments fault missing details such as a time.

Can I add my own details in Respond to a Situation?+

Yes, if they fit the facts and support the goal. Academic Content 6 describes a response that expands beyond the prompt language. A detail that changes the request or invents a new problem works against you.

Should I use a template for Respond to a Situation?+

No. Memorised material is classified as irrelevant in PTE Academic, and Core's lowest Appropriacy band describes mainly pre-packaged forms. A template also wastes seconds you need for the prompt's own points.

Is Respond to a Situation part of PTE Academic?+

Yes. PTE Academic has 2–3 Respond to a Situation items and PTE Core has 2–4 (Academic Score Guide p. 29; Core Score Guide p. 29).
