What counts as a main point in PTE Retell Lecture?
Retell Lecture's Content scale does not just ask what you remembered. One thread runs through the levels: can you separate important points from details? Higher levels reward main ideas expanded with specifics; lower levels describe answers that spend their time on the wrong things.
How the Content scale grades main points
| Content level | Main points and details |
|---|---|
| 6 | Main ideas paraphrased seamlessly in your own words; important points expanded with specificity |
| 5 | Main ideas and some important details captured accurately |
| 4 | Some main ideas and details; may focus on less important details |
| 3 | May not differentiate between important points and details |
| 2 | Focuses on non-essential information while missing main ideas |
| 1 | Isolated words and phrases; no hierarchy of ideas |

Pearson does not define a main point, so here is BandLadder's working definition. Every lecture has a claim (what the lecturer wants you to accept), reasons (why or how it holds) and a conclusion (the implication or recommendation). Everything else is detail.
This sheet is about choosing what to say. For how Retell Lecture differs from the three-speaker task, see Retell Lecture vs Summarize Group Discussion.

Questions
FAQ
How many main points should I include in PTE Retell Lecture?+
Pearson sets no number. Its format page says the best responses retell all the main points and include conclusions or implications. BandLadder advice: the claim, two or three reasons with one specific each, and the conclusion fit 40 seconds.
What is Retell Lecture in PTE?+
A PTE Academic speaking task: you hear a lecture of up to 90 seconds, get 10 seconds to prepare, then retell it in your own words for 40 seconds. It is scored on Content, Pronunciation and Oral Fluency.
Is Retell Lecture in PTE Core?+
No. PTE Core's speaking and writing tasks do not include Retell Lecture (Core Score Guide, January 2026, pp. 24–34). It is a PTE Academic task.
How many Retell Lecture questions are in PTE Academic?+
2–3 per test. Each feeds both Listening and Speaking (PTE Academic Score Guide, July 2025, p. 21). Pearson does not publish how much each task weighs.
How many words should a Retell Lecture answer be?+
There is no word limit. BandLadder advice: about 70–100 words spoken at a steady pace fills most of the 40 seconds without rushing.
Should I use a template for Retell Lecture?+
No. Memorised or pre-prepared material is treated as irrelevant and scores 0 for Content (Academic guide p. 8). Use a structure to choose content (claim, reasons, conclusion), and fill it from the lecture you heard.
Should I include examples from the lecture?+
Only when they carry the argument, such as the study result or figure that proves a reason. Stories and asides can go. The Content scale rewards important points expanded with specificity, not every detail.
