Australia Student Visa English Scores 2026: Two Numbers, Not One

The score that gets you an Australian student visa and the score that gets you into the course are different numbers, and confusing them is the most common reason applicants book the wrong test target. The Department of Home Affairs minimum for a Subclass 500 is IELTS 6.0 overall, roughly PTE 50. Universities routinely ask 6.5 or PTE 58 to 65, and competitive programmes ask more.

Clear the visa threshold and fail the course threshold and you have a valid visa application with no offer to attach to it. Here are both numbers, what changed under the 2025 instrument, and the PTE detail that trips up anyone who has also looked at PR requirements.

The Visa Threshold

Under the Migration (English Language Tests and Evidence Exemptions for Subclass 500 (Student) Visas) Instrument 2025, known as LIN 25/090, the rules apply to tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.

Entry route IELTS PTE Academic
Direct entry to a degree 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 ~50 overall
Packaged with foundation or pathway ~5.5 ~42
Packaged with ELICOS ~5.0–5.5 ~42

Longer ELICOS packages generally lower the visa-stage requirement further, which is a legitimate and widely used route for applicants sitting just under direct entry. Ask your provider how many weeks you'd need.

Nine tests are approved, including IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced, OET, CELPIP General and LanguageCert Academic. Results are valid for two years from the test date.

Every Approved Test Must Be Sat In Person

Online and at-home formats are not accepted for the Subclass 500. That rules out IELTS Online and, separately, means the Duolingo English Test does not work here at all.

This is the same trap as the UK, where IELTS Online fails the Student Route even in the UKVI version. Candidates book online for convenience, then discover the problem with the application already underway. If Australia is your destination, book a test centre.

The PTE Detail That Confuses PR Applicants

If you have read anything about Australian skilled migration, you have seen PTE scores described in bands: Competent, Proficient, Superior. Those bands belong to the points-tested PR system.

The student visa does not use them. It uses a single overall PTE number, around 50 for direct entry, with no band structure attached. A reader who has been aiming at "Proficient" because a PR guide mentioned it is targeting a different system entirely.

Our PTE vs IELTS for Australia PR guide covers the migration side. Treat the two as separate requirements with separate numbers, because they are.

The University Threshold Is the One That Usually Binds

Home Affairs sets a floor. Your institution sets the requirement that actually determines whether you get a Confirmation of Enrolment, and it is almost always higher.

Common patterns run around IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or PTE 50 to 58 for undergraduate study, and IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 to 65 for postgraduate. Nursing, teaching and other registration-linked courses typically add minimum scores in each individual component rather than an overall figure alone.

So the number to prepare for is whichever is higher, and for most applicants that is the university's. Work from your offer letter or the course admissions page, not from the visa minimum. The IELTS band score chart covers how the overall band is calculated, including the rounding rule that decides whether a 6.25 average reaches 6.5.

Two Other Changes Worth Knowing

Genuine Student replaced Genuine Temporary Entrant. The GS requirement is now built into the visa application form rather than submitted as a separate statement. It asks why this course, why Australia, how the qualification connects to your career, and what ties you have to home. Sources differ on whether the switch took effect in March or July 2024, but it has applied throughout 2026 either way.

Financial capacity rose to AUD 29,710 per year from 10 May 2024, up from AUD 24,505, covering living costs on top of tuition and airfare. Some guides still quote figures around AUD 24,000, which is the pre-2024 number.

Reports also indicate the visa application charge increased to AUD 2,500 for the primary applicant from 1 July 2026, and that India now sits at Evidence Level 3, meaning heavier documentary scrutiny. Both are recent, so confirm on the Home Affairs site before lodging rather than relying on any secondary figure, this article included.

How to Sequence It

Find your course's English requirement first. Compare it against the visa minimum and take the higher of the two as your target. Book an in-person test with enough runway that a retake still fits before your offer deadline, since processing from India commonly runs four to eight weeks and an incomplete application runs longer.

If you land just under direct entry, an ELICOS package is a real option rather than a consolation, and it lowers the visa-stage score requirement. Discuss the length with your provider before assuming you need to retake.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What IELTS score do I need for an Australian student visa? The Home Affairs minimum is 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 for direct entry, and lower with a packaged pathway or ELICOS course. Your university's requirement is usually higher and is the one that binds.

2. What is the PTE equivalent? Around 50 overall for direct entry and around 42 with a packaged ELICOS course. The student visa uses a single overall number, not the Competent, Proficient or Superior migration bands.

3. Can I use Duolingo or an online test? No. All approved tests for the Subclass 500 must be sat in person at a secure test centre, which rules out at-home formats including Duolingo and IELTS Online.

4. How long is my English test result valid? Two years from the test date for student visa purposes.

5. What if I score below the requirement? Packaging an ELICOS or foundation course before your main programme lowers the visa-stage English requirement, and longer packages generally lower it further. Ask your provider how many weeks apply to your score.

6. Is the visa English score the same as my university's requirement? No, and this is the most common mix-up. Home Affairs sets a floor; your institution sets its own, usually higher, threshold on your offer letter.

Where to Go From Here

For the migration side and its band system, see PTE vs IELTS for Australia PR. To understand what a PTE number represents before you set a target, use the PTE score chart. If you're comparing destinations, Canada's study permit rules changed substantially and the UK requires a specific IELTS version.
