TOEFL vs IELTS and PTE 2026: Right for America, Wrong Almost Everywhere Else

TOEFL iBT costs roughly the same as IELTS and PTE in India, somewhere between ₹16,900 and ₹18,000 depending on where you look. On price there's nothing to choose between them. On where the score works, there is a great deal.

TOEFL is the default in the United States and holds up well for Canadian and Australian university admission. It cannot be used for a UK student visa, it isn't on IRCC's approved list for Canadian permanent residence, and the version of the test that launched in January 2026 has prompted some UK universities to pause acceptance while they review it. Here's where each test earns its place.

What TOEFL Actually Is

TOEFL iBT is run by ETS, scored out of 120 across Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, and built around North American academic English. It's fully computer-based, with Speaking responses recorded rather than delivered to a person.

Marking uses both AI and human raters, which puts it between IELTS, where Writing and Speaking are human-marked, and PTE, which is scored entirely by machine. Results typically take four to eight days, slower than PTE's roughly two and IELTS's three to five.

ETS changed the test on 21 January 2026, shortening it and adjusting the format. The revised version is also reported to mark natural, connected speech more strictly than earlier editions, so preparation material written before 2026 may misrepresent what the Speaking section now rewards.

The UK Problem

A UK student visa requires a Secure English Language Test. Standard TOEFL is not one. IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI and Trinity ISE are.

What makes this expensive is that many UK universities do accept TOEFL for admission, particularly at postgraduate level. So TOEFL can get you the offer and leave you unable to complete the visa, which means paying for a second test under deadline pressure. We cover the version question in IELTS UKVI vs IELTS Academic, where the same trap costs ₹250 to avoid.

There's a live complication on top of that. Some UK universities have paused acceptance of the January 2026 TOEFL format pending review. If a UK institution is on your list and you're set on TOEFL, confirm in writing that they accept the current version before booking.

The Canada Problem

Canadian universities accept TOEFL for admission without difficulty. Permanent residence is a different matter: TOEFL iBT is not on IRCC's approved list for Express Entry and PR routes, which run on IELTS, PTE Core and CELPIP.

For a student planning to study in Canada and apply for PR afterwards, that means TOEFL cannot carry the second half of the plan. Many Indian students in this position end up taking one test for admission and a different one years later for immigration anyway, which is covered in PTE Core vs PTE Academic.

Worth correcting a claim that circulates widely, including in an earlier version of our own Duolingo comparison: TOEFL is sometimes listed among IRCC's accepted PR tests. Current sources place it outside that list. Verify on the IRCC site before planning around it.

Where TOEFL Wins

The United States. Most US universities list TOEFL first, their score minimums are calibrated for it, and admissions offices read it fluently. India is now the largest sender of students to the US, at over 331,000 in 2023–24, which means US admissions teams process Indian TOEFL scores in volume.

IELTS is accepted nearly as widely in the US. PTE is accepted by some US universities but not universally, so check the admissions page before choosing it for an American application.

If your list is US-only, TOEFL is the path of least resistance. If it mixes the US with the UK, an IELTS or PTE Academic score covers both admission and visa in one sitting.

Test Centre Availability

A practical difference that rarely appears in comparisons. IELTS runs at more than 1,600 centres across India, including smaller cities. PTE has roughly 100. TOEFL centres are concentrated in major cities.

If you're outside a metro, that gap can mean travel and an overnight stay on top of the fee, and it narrows your options if you need a date quickly.

The Comparison

TOEFL iBT IELTS Academic PTE Academic
Fee in India ~₹16,900–18,000 ₹19,000 ₹18,900
Scale 0–120 0–9 bands 10–90

USA Strongest Widely accepted Check per university
UK visa No UKVI version UKVI version
Canada PR No Yes PTE Core only
Australia visa Yes Yes Yes

Choosing

Work backwards from the furthest point in your plan, not the nearest. If that plan ends at a US degree, TOEFL is a clean choice. If it runs through a UK visa, TOEFL cannot finish the job. If it ends in Canadian permanent residence, TOEFL cannot finish that either.

For mixed lists, IELTS covers the most ground in one sitting. For Australia, all three work at the visa stage, though the score you need there is set by two separate thresholds, explained in the Subclass 500 guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I use TOEFL for a UK student visa? No. UK student visas require a Secure English Language Test, and standard TOEFL is not one. Many UK universities still accept it for admission, which is what catches applicants out.

2. Is TOEFL accepted for Canada PR? Current sources place TOEFL outside IRCC's approved list for Express Entry and PR, which uses IELTS, PTE Core and CELPIP. Canadian universities do accept it for admission. Verify on the IRCC site before planning around it.

3. What changed in the January 2026 TOEFL? ETS shortened the test and revised the format, and the new version is reported to mark connected speech more strictly. Some UK universities have paused acceptance pending review, so confirm with your institution.

4. Is TOEFL cheaper than IELTS or PTE in India? Marginally, at roughly ₹16,900 to ₹18,000 against ₹19,000 for IELTS and ₹18,900 for PTE. The difference is small enough that acceptance should decide your choice, not price.

5. Which test is best for US universities? TOEFL, by a narrow margin, since US minimums are calibrated for it. IELTS is accepted nearly as widely. PTE acceptance varies by institution in the US, so check the admissions page.

6. How long are TOEFL scores valid? Two years from the test date, matching IELTS and PTE.

Where to Go From Here

For the UK, start with IELTS UKVI vs IELTS Academic, since the version matters as much as the score. For Canada, PTE Core vs PTE Academic covers the PR side and the SDS closure covers study permits. For a cheaper option with narrower acceptance, see Duolingo vs IELTS and PTE.
