Duolingo English Test vs IELTS and PTE 2026: The Visa Catch
The Duolingo English Test costs around ₹6,000. IELTS costs ₹19,000 and PTE Academic ₹18,900. You take DET at home in about an hour, results land in roughly two days, and more than 5,000 universities accept it. On price and convenience the comparison isn't close.
Then there's the part that decides whether any of that matters: DET is not accepted for student visas in the UK or Australia, and it isn't on IRCC's approved list for Canadian permanent residence. For a large share of Indian candidates, the cheapest test is the one that can't complete the application.
Where Each Test Actually Works
University admission and visa approval are two separate gates, and DET clears the first far more often than the second.
United Kingdom. DET is not a Secure English Language Test, so it cannot support a UK student visa. A university may accept it for your offer and you will still need an approved test for the visa itself.
Australia. The Department of Home Affairs generally requires a test-centre exam for the Subclass 500 student visa. A DET score may get you the offer letter and not the visa.
Canada. Universities often accept DET for admission. IRCC does not accept it for permanent residence routes such as Express Entry, where the approved tests are IELTS, PTE Core, TOEFL and CELPIP. Our PTE Core guide covers that list in detail.
United States and Ireland. This is where DET is strongest, with wide university acceptance and fewer visa complications.
Professional registration. Nursing and medical councils typically require IELTS. If your plan runs through a licensing body, check its rule before you look at any price.
The Question to Ask Before You Book
Not "which test is cheapest" but "does one test cover both my offer and my visa." If the answer is no, the ₹13,000 saving disappears the moment you pay for a second exam, and you've also spent the weeks between the two.
For a US-bound student, DET often covers everything and the saving is real. For a UK or Australia-bound student, it usually doesn't, and the cheap test becomes the expensive route.
Score Conversion, and Why the Numbers Disagree
Published DET-to-IELTS conversions contradict each other, and the spread is wide enough to matter.
For IELTS 6.5, one source puts the DET equivalent at 110, another at 115, and a third at 120. That's a ten-point gap on the same band. Neither Duolingo nor IELTS publishes a joint official concordance, so every table you find is somebody's estimate.
Rough working ranges, treated as estimates and nothing firmer: the low 100s to around 110 sits near IELTS 6.0, roughly 110 to 120 near 6.5, and roughly 120 to 130 near 7.0. Most competitive programmes ask somewhere between 105 and 130.
Take your target from the university's own admissions page. They publish a DET minimum directly, which removes the conversion problem entirely. Converting from an IELTS requirement is guesswork you don't need to do.
A second trap: DET reports subscores on a different basis from IELTS and PTE, so per-section minimums don't map across at all. If your programme requires a minimum in each skill, a converted overall score tells you nothing about whether you'd clear it.
How the Tests Feel Different
DET runs about an hour and is adaptive, meaning it gets harder as you answer correctly. You take it at home, typing and speaking to a camera under remote proctoring.
IELTS runs close to three hours with a face-to-face Speaking interview, and Writing and Speaking are marked by trained human examiners against published band descriptors. PTE Academic runs around two hours, is fully computer-delivered, and is scored entirely by machine.
The marking difference is a strategy question rather than a quality one. Automated scoring rewards mechanical accuracy, clear pronunciation and predictable structure. Human examiners have more room to reward a response that's fluent and well-argued but imperfect. Candidates whose fluency drops in front of a person often do better on PTE or DET, while candidates whose writing is strong on ideas but uneven on mechanics sometimes do better on IELTS.
DET being adaptive and short also means one bad stretch carries more weight than it would across a three-hour paper.

Choose DET if you're applying to US or Irish universities, your institutions publish a DET minimum, and no visa route in your plan demands a centre-based test.
