IELTS UKVI vs IELTS Academic 2026: The ₹250 Decision
IELTS Academic costs ₹19,000 in India. IELTS for UKVI costs ₹19,250. The tests are identical in content, format, question types, scoring and difficulty, confirmed by both IDP and the British Council. The entire difference is where you sit it, how your identity is checked, and what the certificate says.
That ₹250 decides whether your result can support a UK visa application. Book the standard version when your route requires UKVI and you pay ₹19,000 again, plus the weeks it takes to sit and receive a second test.
What's Actually Different
Nothing about the exam itself. Same four sections, same timings, same band descriptors, same examiners. A candidate switching between the two would notice no difference in the room.
Three things change around it. UKVI runs only at test centres approved by the UK Home Office as Secure English Language Test venues. Identity verification is stricter. And your Test Report Form carries additional security features and states that it's for UK Visas and Immigration, which is what allows a caseworker to verify it.
UKVI is not harder. It's the same test with a different stamp, and anyone telling you it's more difficult is selling preparation you don't need.
Who Needs the UKVI Version
You need UKVI if you're applying for a UK Student Route visa on a course below degree level, which includes foundation courses and pre-sessional English programmes. Universities are strict on this. Certain work-based routes require it too.
At degree level and above, it depends. Many universities can assess your English themselves and accept standard IELTS Academic, which removes the visa-side requirement. Others cannot, and their CAS will say so.
Your CAS letter is the authority. When your university issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, it states whether a UKVI-verified score is required. Read it before booking anything, because a university accepting standard IELTS for admission does not mean the visa route accepts it.
The Safe Default
UKVI works for both visa applications and university admission. Standard IELTS Academic works for admission only.
So if there's any chance a UK visa sits in your plan, UKVI is the version to book. It costs ₹250 more and covers strictly more ground. The only reason to choose standard IELTS is certainty that no UK visa is involved, or that your university handles the English assessment itself.
Online IELTS Won't Work Either
IELTS Online, the home edition, is not accepted for UK Student Route applications even when you sit the UKVI version. UK visa applications require in-person testing at an approved centre.
This catches candidates who book online for convenience and discover the problem when the visa application is already underway. If a UK visa is your destination, book in person.
The Three UKVI Formats
IELTS for UKVI comes in three versions. Academic is for university study. General Training covers work and migration routes. Life Skills, graded A1, A2 or B1 against the CEFR, tests only Speaking and Listening and serves family and settlement visas rather than study.
Match the format to your visa route, not to what your friends took. A Life Skills pass does nothing for a Student Route application.
The B2 Change From January 2026
The UK Home Office raised its English requirement from B1 to B2 for first-time Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual applicants, effective 8 January 2026 under Statement of Changes HC 1333.
If you're on a work route rather than a study route, this is the detail most preparation guides haven't caught up with. B2 corresponds to a meaningfully higher band than B1, so anyone planning around older requirement figures should recheck the current threshold on gov.uk before booking a test date.
Watch the Fee Figures You Read
Published IELTS UKVI fees for India vary widely across sites, with figures from ₹13,940 to ₹18,000 still circulating. Those are older numbers.
IDP India's 2026 fee table lists ₹19,000 for IELTS Academic and General Training against ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI. IDP notes that fees are reviewed periodically, so confirm on the IDP or British Council India site before you register rather than trusting any third-party table, this one included.
Preparation Is Identical
Because the tests are the same, so is the preparation. Nothing about a UKVI booking changes how you should study, and there's no separate UKVI syllabus.
Work from the standard material. The band score chart covers how raw scores convert and the rounding rule that decides your overall band, and the Band 7 study plan sequences all four sections. If your route needs General Training rather than Academic, the General Training Writing Task 1 guide covers the letter task that Academic candidates never see.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is IELTS UKVI harder than IELTS Academic? No. Content, format, questions, examiners and marking criteria are identical. Only the venue security, identity checks and certificate differ.
2. How much more does IELTS UKVI cost in India? ₹250, at ₹19,250 against ₹19,000, per IDP India's 2026 fee table. Older figures still online are out of date.
3. Can I use IELTS UKVI for university admission too? Yes. UKVI is accepted for both visa applications and admission, which is why it's the safer booking when you're unsure.
4. Do I need UKVI for a degree-level course? Sometimes. Many universities assess English themselves at degree level and accept standard IELTS. Your CAS letter states which applies to you.
5. Can I take IELTS Online for a UK student visa? No. UK Student Route applications require in-person testing at an approved centre, even for the UKVI version.
6. What's IELTS Life Skills for? Family and settlement visa routes. It tests Speaking and Listening only, graded A1, A2 or B1, and doesn't work for study applications.
Where to Go From Here
If you're still choosing a test, Duolingo vs IELTS vs PTE covers which ones clear which visa routes, and it matters here: Duolingo isn't a Secure English Language Test, so it can't support a UK visa at all. Canada-bound applicants face the same category of trap with PTE Core versus PTE Academic. For scoring mechanics, see the IELTS band score chart.
