What is the difference between IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Academic?

The questions are the same. IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training) has the same design, format and difficulty as standard IELTS, but you sit it at a UK Home Office-approved centre with extra security, and the TRF carries UKVI-specific details. You need it for most UK visas that require a secure English test. Life Skills is a different, speaking-and-listening-only test.

Same content, different test conditions

The British Council says IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training match standard IELTS in design, format and difficulty, but must be taken at a Home Office-approved centre with additional security, and the TRF includes UKVI-specific information (British Council).

UKVI only accepts tests taken in person at an official centre, so IELTS Online cannot be used (ielts.org). Writing on Paper is also not available for UKVI tests, which will be fully digital (ielts.org).

When you need IELTS for UKVI

ielts.org lists IELTS for UKVI for, among others, the Skilled Worker visa and Health and Care Worker visa (at least 5.5 in each skill for B2), the Student visa below degree level (at least 4.0 in each skill), and other work and settlement routes. For degree-level study with a university that assesses your English itself, ielts.org says IELTS or IELTS for UKVI at 5.5 in each skill is the equivalent (ielts.org).

Family, settlement and citizenship routes that only need speaking and listening use IELTS for UKVI Life Skills instead; see also IELTS for the UK family visa. UK rules change; confirm the level on gov.uk for your visa before booking.

How IELTS Life Skills is different

Life Skills tests only speaking and listening, at CEFR A1, A2 or B1, and gives a Pass or Fail instead of a band score (ielts.org). IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training test all four skills and give band scores like any IELTS test.

Cost and cancellation

IELTS for UKVI often costs a little more; in India IDP charges INR 19,250 against INR 19,000 for IELTS on computer (IDP India). UKVI tests follow a fixed UKVI cancellation policy: 75% refund more than 14 days before, 50% within 14 days but more than two days before, 25% within two days, nothing on or after test day. More in IELTS reschedule, cancel and refund rules.

Fees and policies are set per country and test centre, and they change. Check the page for the country where you will sit the test before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official IELTS advice.
