Planning for January 2027? Start with the date your university must receive acceptable English evidence, then work backwards to your IELTS or PTE test. An application deadline, an offer-condition deadline and a deposit deadline can be different dates. Your campus and applicant country can change them too.
Official sources checked: 21 September 2026. This guide covers three UK university examples and an original planning exercise. It is not a complete list of January courses. Check the linked university page and your individual offer before committing to a test or payment; courses can close when places fill.

January 2027 UK intake: three official deadline examples
Ulster University: applicant-country groups have different dates
Ulster's international application page lists the following January 2027 schedule:
- Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ghana and Nepal: apply by 13 November 2026; meet offer conditions by 18 November; deposit received by 24 November; complete the CAS request and required uploads by 1 December.
- Rest of World: apply by 4 December 2026; meet conditions by 7 December; deposit received by 11 December; complete the CAS request and required uploads by 14 December.
The listed semester start is 25 January 2027. Allow for bank-transfer clearance. These are the deadlines on Ulster's Global application page; do not automatically apply them to a partner-campus course. Verify your course, location and offer. Check Ulster's January deadlines.
Swansea University: documents are due before the deposit
For January 2027 international postgraduate taught entry, Swansea lists an application deadline of 23 November 2026, a document deadline of 7 December and a deposit deadline of 11 December. The document deadline covers evidence needed to satisfy offer and CAS conditions.
These are standard dates, with course-specific exceptions and possible earlier closure when places fill. Confirm that your selected course actually offers January entry. The College's pathway dates are separate, so use the schedule for your own route. Check Swansea's application and document deadlines.
University of Portsmouth: check the campus as well as your country
For applicants from India, Portsmouth lists these January 2027 dates:
- Portsmouth campus: apply by 30 November 2026; pay the deposit by 14 December; meet all other conditions by 21 December.
- London campus: apply by 9 November 2026; pay the deposit by 23 November; meet all other conditions by 30 November.
Other applicant-country groups have different dates, including earlier deadlines. The university says London permits no late registration for this intake. These examples therefore should not be reused for an applicant from Nepal, Bangladesh or another country. Find your exact Portsmouth country and campus group.
Build an English-test timeline that fits your offer
Copy the following checklist into your notes. Complete one version per course. Leave unknowns visibly blank and ask admissions to resolve them rather than borrowing another university's rule.
- Course and entry: record the exact programme, campus and January 2027 start. Save the official course link.
- Accepted evidence: record the precise test variant or waiver route and whether admissions has confirmed it for you.
- Score target: copy the overall requirement and each Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking minimum separately.
- Evidence deadline: record when the university must receive and accept your results, not merely when you intend to sit the test.
- First test: choose a feasible appointment, allowing for the provider's current result and score-sharing processes, admissions checks and a possible retake.
- Other milestones: track application, documents, deposit and CAS steps separately. Identify which depend on completing the English condition.
- Review point: choose a date to discuss alternatives with admissions if the remaining schedule becomes unrealistic.
A test booked on the evidence deadline leaves no reliable room for results or verification. Equally, paying a deposit does not by itself prove that the English condition is complete. Ask admissions whether a pending test result is compatible with applying now; this guide does not assume every course allows it.
IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or a UKVI test?
Use your course's accepted-test list and its instructions for your circumstances. Do not treat a generic score conversion as proof that a university accepts another exam. Check whether the stated requirement applies to the test format you plan to book, and whether a waiver or retake option is accepted for your particular course.
Visa evidence is a separate check. GOV.UK's Student visa English guidance says a Higher Education Provider can assess English itself for degree-level study or above, at the equivalent of CEFR B2. Therefore, do not assume every degree applicant must book a UKVI-branded test. Confirm your provider's route and evidence instructions.
Our IELTS Academic and UKVI comparison explains the distinction. If you studied in English, use the MOI evidence checklist to prepare a question for admissions; an English-medium degree is not an automatic waiver everywhere.
Try it: spot the problem in three application plans
These are fictional planning exercises, not student case studies or official test questions. Decide on the next action, then reveal the explanation.
1. The wrong country deadline
An applicant from Nepal uses Ulster's Rest of World condition deadline to plan a late-November test. What should they check first?
Reveal the deadline check
They have used the wrong applicant group. The Nepal group has an earlier offer-condition date in the schedule above. They should confirm the applicable course and country deadline with admissions and plan for results to be accepted before it. A later test date should not be treated as sufficient without explicit confirmation of an alternative arrangement.
2. One score is still below the requirement
A fictional offer asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall and at least 6.0 in every skill. The applicant has 6.5 overall, Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.0. Is the English condition complete?
Reveal the skill gap
No: Writing is below the stated 6.0 minimum. The overall result does not replace the individual skill condition. Prioritise Writing practice, and ask admissions which fresh evidence or retake options they accept. A platform practice estimate is useful feedback, not a substitute for an accepted official result.
3. The deposit date is mistaken for the document date
An applicant to a Swansea international postgraduate taught course plans to submit all English evidence on the deposit deadline. What is missing from the plan?
Reveal the missing milestone
The standard document deadline comes earlier. The applicant should put the document and deposit dates in separate calendar entries, confirm any course-specific exception and allow time for admissions to check their evidence. A payment deadline is not permission to submit documents late.
Turn the deadline into focused IELTS or PTE practice
Once your exam and targets are confirmed, start with a diagnostic and a list of recurring mistakes. Give the weakest required skill a specific task each session: revise a paragraph after Writing feedback, review why a Reading answer is supported, or replay a spoken response and identify one improvement. Repeat a comparable task to check progress rather than collecting scores without reviewing them.
For IELTS Academic, use the Task 2 worked essay and planning exercise. For PTE Academic, try the ten Fill in the Blanks passages with explanations or follow the four-week preparation plan. A study-plan duration is a suggested routine, not a promise of reaching your required score within that period.

Before you book
Your next step is to have one written, course-specific answer to this question: “Which English evidence must you receive, and by what date, for my January 2027 offer?” Keep that answer beside your practice target. If the timeline changes, revisit the official deadline and discuss the next available route with admissions rather than assuming an extension.
