What IELTS score do you need for Aalto University?

IELTS, TOEFL and PTE results are valid for two years from the test date; for 2027 admissions the test must be taken on or after 7 December 2024, and scores must reach Aalto by 12 January 2027 at 15.00 (UTC+2). TOEFL MyBest scores are not accepted, and C1/C2 results count if they can be verified online (tests taken after 2005).

You need no test if you hold a degree from a Finnish university or university of applied sciences, or an English-medium bachelor's, master's, licentiate or doctoral degree completed while residing in the EU/EEA or a listed country, which includes Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, the UK and the USA. At least half the degree must be done in English there, a bachelor's must be at least three years, and an offshore campus outside those countries does not count.

Upper secondary education completed in English while residing in the EU/EEA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland, the UK or the USA also counts.

For the English-taught bachelor's in business and economics and in science and technology, Aalto's high-school diploma instructions say all students are expected to have sufficient language skills but are not required to submit a language test result. The bachelor's FAQ says the same.

The Bachelor's Programme in Design and Media is the exception: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (IELTS Online, UKVI Academic and One Skill Retake accepted), TOEFL iBT 92 before 21 January 2026 or 4.5 after, PTE Academic 68, C1 Advanced grade C or C2 Proficiency Level C1. For 2027 admissions the test must be taken on or after 7 January 2025, and results must reach Aalto by 29 January 2027 at 15.00 (UTC+2).

Aalto's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student residence permit or visa. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Aalto programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
