Equivalent tests and English courses

AIT accepts IELTS or an equivalent result but does not print PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo scores on its apply page, so confirm the equivalent with AIT before booking another test.

For the vocational IT diploma, students can instead complete an approved English course with Greenwich English College or another approved college, such as 8 weeks of Upper Intermediate General English or 12 weeks of English for Business, with an exit level of 5.5 or higher. Direct entry is also possible after passing the Greenwich English College placement test, subject to your country's assessment level.

Age, portfolio and how to apply

International students must be 18 or older when their course starts. If you do not meet the standard entry requirements for the Bachelor of Information Technology, AIT may consider other evidence, such as a portfolio. AIT says international applicants can apply through one of its education agent partners.

Domestic Year 12 applicants apply through VTAC in Victoria or UAC in New South Wales.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your AIT course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the Academy of Interactive Technology (AIT) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
