Studies in English and the literacy assessment

Whitehouse says that, depending on your educational background and country of origin, you may not need a test if you successfully completed previous studies in which instruction, examination and assessment were in English. The page does not list PTE or Duolingo scores.

International applicants who completed high school overseas, as well as applicants admitted after adjustment or on work and life experience, may have to complete a literacy assessment: a 1,000-word written research task on a set topic.

How to apply

Whitehouse takes direct applications only, through the Apply Now button on its website, and welcomes international students to its Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane campuses. Bachelor's applicants need a creative portfolio of 4 to 6 pieces, a 300-word motivational statement, transcripts and a CV, and must be at least 18 when they apply. Every applicant has an interview, and Whitehouse says results follow within 24 hours of the interview once all documents are in.

Master of Design applicants also submit a project proposal and a portfolio of recent work relevant to it.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Whitehouse course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
