Other ways to meet the requirement

Undergraduates can also qualify by graduating from a US high school, completing an approved University System of Georgia (USG) campus-based ESL programme, completing degree work where English is the official language of instruction, or completing English 1101 and/or 1102 with a C or better at an accredited US institution. Cambridge IGCSE or O Level English at D or better, and UK GCSE or A-Level English at C or better, are also listed.

Graduate applicants can use a degree from a regionally accredited US institution, a degree from an international institution where English was the sole language of instruction (confirmed directly to AU), or an approved USG ESL programme. The test is waived for citizens of listed countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada (except Quebec) and Australia.

Duolingo is not listed on either page.

Sending scores and how to check

Graduate scores must come directly from ETS or IELTS to Augusta University, institution code 5406, with no department code.

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Augusta University sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture, see IELTS for the USA.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Augusta programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Augusta University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
