Undergraduate waivers
The undergraduate page waives the test for credentials from an accredited English-medium US school, college or university, or an accredited English-medium school in listed countries such as Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom, with the medium of instruction noted on the transcript. Credentials earned online cannot be used.
IB English at HL grade 5 or SL grade 6 also meets the requirement, as do SAT EBRW 580 or ACT Reading and English 23. Grades in Scandinavian upper secondary English are also listed. PTE is not mentioned.

Graduate rules and how to check
The School of Business says the IELTS score should be no more than two years old, and that applicants who completed English Composition I and II at another US institution with a C or higher do not need a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score. Official reports go to institution code 5025. The engineering page lists countries, including Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, whose applicants do not need to meet the language requirement.
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Mercer sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture, see IELTS for the USA.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Mercer programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Mercer University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
