Visa English requirements

Do you need an English test for British citizenship if you are married to a British citizen?

Yes. Gov.uk says spouses and civil partners of British citizens can apply after 3 years in the UK once they have ILR or settled status, but must also prove their knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic and pass the Life in the UK test. A B1 test accepted for your ILR usually covers the English part.

What the spouse route asks for

From gov.uk's citizenship for spouses page. Marriage shortens the residence period, but the language and Life in the UK requirements are the same as for other naturalisation applicants.

Using your ILR English

Form AN guidance says that if your ILR was granted on a B1 qualification, you meet the English requirement for naturalisation without another test, even if the test has expired. That covers someone who settled on the partner route with a B1 SELT.

If you were exempt from English at ILR (for example as a bereaved partner or victim of domestic abuse), the guidance says you must now meet the requirement unless exempt by age or a physical or mental condition.

Residence and absences

Gov.uk says you must have been in the UK exactly 3 years before the Home Office receives your application, and should not have spent more than 270 days outside the UK in those 3 years or more than 90 days in the last 12 months (gov.uk).

If you take a new SELT for this application, it must be awarded in the 2 years before you apply.
