How Brown handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduates can self-report, but every matriculating student who did so must send an official report. For fall 2027 entry the official reports are due in May 2027, and if your result expires before then you must have the testing agency send it before it expires. Brown does not accept MyBest scores.

The Graduate School accepts the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Send official scores to reporting code 3094; School of Public Health applicants send scores to both the Graduate School and SOPHAS (code 5688). If your US advanced degree was taught mainly in another language, the TOEFL must be taken.

Graduate students with teaching assistantships whose native language is not English are tested on arrival before they teach. If they fall short of certification, the appointment can be approved provisionally on condition that they take an English-language training course in the first semester and do other duties meanwhile.

For comparison, the undergraduate page expects IELTS 8.0, and the Graduate School page recommends an overall IELTS band of 7.

If your TOEFL score is below Brown's level

Brown says undergraduates must reach English proficiency before admission: it offers no English as a second language courses for undergraduates and does not admit students on a provisional basis. Graduate applicants may qualify for a waiver based on where their previous institution is; those from countries not on Brown's list can ask their university to send a letter confirming English was the language of instruction.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Brown programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
