How Tufts handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate applicants may self-report through the Applicant Status Page after applying, and those who enrol must send official scores. Section scores must come from the same test date and the most recent sitting; Tufts does not superscore and does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores. TOEFL ITP Plus does not meet the requirement. The code for sending TOEFL scores is 3901.

Graduate applicants send official scores to institution code 3901 with no department code. Scores must come directly from the test provider and can take five to ten business days; Tufts accepts official scores for up to two weeks after your programme's deadline.

For comparison, the undergraduate page recommends IELTS 7+, and the graduate page generally advises IELTS 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below Tufts' level

Undergraduates with at least three years at a secondary school taught in English do not need a test, although students in ESOL classes may be asked for proof. Graduate applicants can qualify for exemptions listed on the graduate page. Neither page describes a conditional admission or pathway route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Tufts programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
