For freshmen, IELTS is 5.5 overall with writing at least 5.5 and no section below 5.0. For master's students, IELTS is 6.0 overall with writing at least 6.0 and no section below 5.5. The PTE route sets an overall score only.

If you fall short
The freshman section says that without a passing test score you can apply for guaranteed conditional admission through CSUSM's English language program. Transfer applicants can be conditionally admitted through the language program if they lack a passing IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge score. The master's page lists degree-based exemptions but no conditional route.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your CSUSM programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
