Can you correct yourself in PTE speaking?

You can, but Pearson advises against it. Its tips for Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation say that if you repeat ideas, correct yourself or hesitate, you use up time and lose points, so keep talking and ignore any mistakes. False starts and repetitions count against oral fluency, and in Read Aloud an inserted word counts against content.

Pearson's advice

On the PTE Academic format page, Pearson's tips for the longer speaking tasks say the same thing: you only have 40 seconds (2 minutes for Summarize Group Discussion), and repeating ideas, correcting yourself or hesitating uses up valuable time and loses score points. 'So keep talking and ignore any mistakes that you make.' The PTE Core page repeats it for Respond to a Situation.

How a self-correction is scored

From the Score Guide and Pearson's task pages:

TaskEffect on contentEffect on fluency
Read AloudReplacements, insertions and omissions each count as one error, so a repeated or wrong word can cost contentRepetitions and false starts lower fluency
Repeat SentenceErrors are replacements, omissions and insertions; hesitations and pauses are ignored for contentRepetitions and false starts lower fluency
Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group DiscussionTime spent correcting is time not spent on contentRepetitions and false starts lower fluency

How many slips are allowed

The Score Guide's fluency scale gives 5 only with no hesitations, repetitions or false starts. A 4 allows no more than one hesitation, one repetition or a false start, and a 3 allows a few. One quick fix will not sink your score, but a habit of restarting sentences will.

You cannot re-record either. The handbook says there is no opportunity to re-record your responses.

Frequently asked questions

Should I correct a mispronounced word in Read Aloud?+

Pearson's general advice is to keep going. A correction adds a repetition, which counts against fluency.

Do repeated words count as errors in Repeat Sentence?+

Content errors are replacements, omissions and insertions. Hesitations and pauses are ignored for content, but repetitions still affect fluency.

Is one false start a big problem?+

Not usually. The fluency band 4 allows one hesitation, one repetition or a false start.

Can I start the answer again?+

No. Each answer is recorded once.
