The rule
The SELT guidance lists three conditions: on the list of approved tests, sat at an approved test location, and awarded in the two years before the date of application. Approved locations are on gov.uk's UK and overseas centre lists.
IELTS says UKVI accepts only tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre, because UKVI requires an additional layer of security.

Remote examiners at a centre
Some SELTs use a remote examiner while you sit at the centre. Trinity says its GESE SELT is delivered by examiners via video conference, and at a Trinity SELT centre you take it on a Trinity tablet set up by a steward. The approved centre is still where you sit the test.

Booking an approved test
Book on the provider's own website: IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert and Pearson in and outside the UK, Trinity in the UK only and PSI outside the UK only (gov.uk).
Gov.uk says you should be able to take a test within 28 days of booking, though not always at the nearest location, and that you must bring an original, current photo ID that matches your booking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use IELTS Online for a UK Student visa?+
Not as a SELT. A university may accept other evidence for degree-level study under its own assessment, but a SELT must be sat at an approved location.
Is PTE Home taken at home?+
No, despite the name. It is a SELT for family and settlement routes taken at approved Pearson centres.
Why does gov.uk insist on test centres?+
Gov.uk says approved centres have been assessed as meeting Home Office requirements under the secure English language testing arrangements.
Can I take LanguageCert online for a UK visa?+
Not as a SELT. Gov.uk asks for the LanguageCert SELT versions, sat at an approved location.
