What ETS says about templates
ETS's testing policies FAQ says some test takers use templates in Speaking or Writing as a blueprint for organising their thoughts. It warns that a template may help with a general structure, but if it does more than that you are probably breaking ETS policy, because you must use your own words. Since many people use the same templates, a template raises the chance that your response looks like other test takers' responses. ETS strongly recommends producing your own responses during the test.
| Practice | ETS position |
|---|---|
| Knowing a general order for your points | A template used only for structure can help |
| Reusing set sentences or paragraphs | Risky: responses must be in your own words |
| Memorised answers from other sources | A violation of testing policies |
| Grammar or writing-assistance software | Not permitted |
| Preparing Writing responses on scratch paper before the task | Not allowed |
How ETS spots memorised writing
ETS says its raters can recognise memorised written responses, and it uses detection software to find passages similar to outside sources or to other test takers' responses (ETS FAQ).
The bulletin allows ETS to cancel scores if a speaking or writing response is substantially similar to other TOEFL responses, or uses quotations or paraphrases from published or unpublished sources without attribution (Information Bulletin). Using scratch paper or notes to prepare Writing responses ahead of time is listed as a violation.

What happens if you break the rule
ETS can cancel your scores, ban you from testing and refer the matter to law enforcement (ETS FAQ). The bulletin says cancellation decisions are not subject to appeal to ETS (bulletin); see why TOEFL scores get cancelled.
A safer way to prepare is to practise planning and timing with fresh prompts, so the words you produce on the day are your own. The TOEFL exam pattern guide lists the current tasks. Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from ETS or Duolingo.
