CUD English scores by level
From CUD's undergraduate admission requirements and graduate admission page. TOEFL iBT is given on both the old scale and the new scale for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026.
| Programme | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT (old / new) | TOEFL ITP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's (most programmes) | 5.0 | 61 / 2.5 | 500 |
| BA in Creative Industries | 5.5 | 71 / 3.5 | 530 |
| Master's (full admission) | 6.0 | 79 / 4 | 550 |
| Master's (conditional) | 5.5 | 71 / 3.5 | 530 |
Tests CUD will not accept, and exemptions
CUD says IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI and TOEFL Home Edition are not acceptable for bachelor's admission, and that home-edition TOEFL and IELTS Academic UKVI or Online are not accepted for master's admission. Other standardised English tests approved by the UAE Ministry of Education may be used; PTE and Duolingo are not named.
The bachelor's test rule is set for applicants from non-UAE-MOE curricula that are not taught in English. For master's study, an English-medium undergraduate may be admitted without a test only if they completed all their schooling (K-12) and a bachelor's degree in English in a reference English-speaking country such as the UK, USA, Australia or New Zealand.

English for Academic Purposes and conditional entry
Admitted bachelor's students below the required score join one of three levels of CUD's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme in their first semester, placed by IELTS score or a placement test. They can complete no more than 12 credit hours before meeting the English requirement.
Conditional master's students must reach IELTS 6.0 by the end of their first semester, may take at most six credit hours that semester (not counting intensive English) and need a CGPA of 3.0 in their first six credit hours, or face dismissal.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your CUD programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Canadian University Dubai publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
