Programme language decides the test
Study in Korea, the government portal, says international students must submit proof of language proficiency for university admission and graduation, following each university's or department's rules (Study in Korea: language requirements). That means a minimum Korean level for Korean-taught programmes or a minimum English level for English-taught ones.
For Korean-taught programmes, applicants typically submit a TOPIK score report (paper or internet-based), and some universities accept a King Sejong Institute course certificate.
| Programme | Usual proof | Set by |
|---|---|---|
| Korean-taught | TOPIK (PBT or IBT); some accept a King Sejong Institute certificate | University or department |
| English-taught | An English test the university lists, such as IELTS or TOEFL | University or department |
One university's list: UNIST
On its GKS graduate page, UNIST requires an English test report from all applicants and accepts TOEIC, TOEIC Speaking and Writing, TOEFL, IELTS, TEPS, G-TELP and OPIc, taken within 2 years of the application deadline. It does not accept self-administered tests "such as Duolingo English Test, IELTS Indicator" (UNIST). Citizens of listed English-speaking countries, and applicants with a certificate that their bachelor's or higher was taught in English, are exempt there.
That list is UNIST's. Other universities set different tests and scores, so read each admission guide.

Korean can still matter on an English-taught degree
Because Study in Korea says language rules can apply to graduation as well as admission, check whether your programme sets a TOPIK target before you finish. Government scholarship holders under GKS must reach TOPIK level 3 before their degree starts. Requirements change between intakes and scholarship rounds. Confirm the current rule on the Study in Korea language page before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not admissions advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I study in Korea with IELTS?+
Yes, for English-taught programmes that list IELTS. Korean-taught programmes usually ask for TOPIK instead.
Do Korean universities accept Duolingo?+
Some do not. UNIST's GKS page excludes self-administered tests such as Duolingo and IELTS Indicator. Check each university.
Is TOPIK needed for English-taught programmes?+
Not usually for admission, but Study in Korea says language rules can also apply at graduation, so check your programme.
How old can my IELTS result be at UNIST?+
UNIST requires the test date to fall within 2 years of the online application deadline.
