The 2026 Global Korea Scholarship guidelines for graduate degrees list "Score report of valid TOPIK/TOPIK IBT (Original) or English Proficiency Test (copy)" as an optional document. For English, the accepted tests are TOEFL iBT and IELTS, and the certificate must not expire before 28 February 2026 (GKS-G 2026 guidelines).
The guidelines' FAQ is direct: language certificates are optional and you may apply without them, but some universities or departments may require a minimum level, and submitting evidence of language ability is recommended. Proof that your degree was taught in English cannot replace an official English test.

TOPIK counts more than IELTS
Only TOPIK reaches 100% of the language points, and applicants with TOPIK or TOPIK IBT level 3 or above get additional points worth 10% of the total. A high TOEFL iBT or IELTS score is listed among the evaluation preferences. If several reports are submitted, only the highest counts (GKS-G 2026 guidelines).

Korean after you are selected
GKS includes a year of Korean language training before the degree (Study in Korea: GKS). The guidelines say all GKS scholars must reach TOPIK level 3 to proceed to their degree programme, and some departments ask for level 4. Scholars with TOPIK 5 or 6 are exempt from the language programme. Requirements change between intakes and scholarship rounds. Is IELTS compulsory for GKS 2026?+
No. The graduate guidelines make TOPIK and English test certificates optional, though some universities or departments set a minimum.
What IELTS score gets the most GKS points?+
IELTS 8.0 and above earns 90% of the language points. Only TOPIK level 5 or above earns 100%.
Does an English-medium degree certificate replace IELTS for GKS?+
No. The GKS FAQ says medium-of-instruction proof cannot replace an official English test certificate.
Does GKS accept the Duolingo English Test?+
The GKS guidelines name TOEFL iBT and IELTS. UNIST's GKS page says self-administered tests such as Duolingo and IELTS Indicator are not accepted there.
Do GKS scholars need to learn Korean?+
Yes. All scholars must reach TOPIK level 3 to start their degree, unless exempt with TOPIK 5 or 6 or under the other listed exemptions.
