Does Irish citizenship require an English language test?

No. Immigration Service Delivery's guide to citizenship by naturalisation sets residence, identity, good character and documentary rules but no English language test. Most adults need 5 years of reckonable residence; spouses and civil partners of Irish citizens need 3 years of marriage or partnership and 3 years' residence. Documents not in English or Irish need a certified translation.

What you do need to show

For adults, the guide asks you to prove your identity and that you are 18 or over, and to meet the residency requirements and the good character requirement. For spouses and civil partners it also lists proof that the marriage or partnership is genuine and enduring, an intention to reside on the island of Ireland, and willingness to attend a citizenship ceremony and make a declaration of fidelity.

Where English appears, it is about paperwork: "If any document is not in English or Irish you must also include a translation from a professional translation service" (ISD).

Useful tools

ISD's citizenship page links a naturalisation residency calculator for non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals and a guidance questionnaire to check whether you are already a citizen by birth or descent.

Rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current requirement on the ISD citizenship guide before you book a test or apply. This guide restates the official page; it is not legal or immigration advice.
