Visa English requirements

Does a UK Student visa dependant need IELTS?

No. Gov.uk sets no English test for a Student's partner or child; the English requirement applies to the student. The harder rule is eligibility: you can only bring dependants if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than 6 months, or a full-time postgraduate on a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree of 9 months or longer.

Who can bring a partner or children

The Student visa page says you must be either a government-sponsored student starting a course longer than 6 months, or a full-time student on a postgraduate course (RQF level 7 or above) of 9 months or longer. If the postgraduate course starts on or after 1 January 2024, it must be a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree.

What dependants prove instead of English

A partner shows a marriage or civil partnership certificate, or evidence of an unmarried partnership; a child shows a birth certificate, that they are not married or in a civil partnership, and that they live with you unless in full-time education elsewhere.

Each dependant needs money on top of yours: £845 a month for courses in London or £680 a month outside London, for up to 9 months, held for 28 days in a row. They do not need to show it if they have been in the UK with a valid visa for 12 months. For applications to extend or switch inside the UK, gov.uk says each person pays £558 plus the healthcare surcharge.

Where English still matters

The student must meet the Student route's own English rule: B2 at degree level, which for a PhD can be a university assessment. See IELTS for the UK Student visa. Dependant visas end on the same date as the student's. Immigration rules change, sometimes at short notice. Confirm the current rule on the gov.uk Student visa page before you book a test or apply.
