University English requirements

What TOEFL score do you need for Drexel University?

Drexel's College of Engineering lists TOEFL and TOEFL iBT Home Edition minimums of 4.5 on the new scale or 90 on the old scale for graduate applicants. Undergraduates who need a test must take an approved exam such as the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL Essentials; the page gives no minimum, and Drexel considers your highest TOEFL section scores. The International Gateway pathway accepts lower TOEFL ranges.

How Drexel handles TOEFL scores

Drexel's TOEFL school code is 2194. For undergraduates, Drexel encourages you to submit every sitting and considers your highest section scores across test dates; its MyBest policy says it will consider your highest TOEFL section scores from full results submitted. Exemptions include SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 600 or ACT English of 27.

For graduate engineering programmes, the English test is waived if you graduated from a US institution of higher education. The pages read today do not state a validity period.

For comparison, the College of Engineering page sets IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below Drexel's level

Graduate engineering applicants below the department level who meet all other requirements may be accepted with a recommendation to complete the graduate language bridge programme, the five-week Graduate Preparation Program at Drexel's English Language Center. Undergraduates can apply to the International Gateway Program, a foundation year with up to 25 transferable credits, after which qualified students move into their major.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Drexel programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
