How ECU handles Duolingo scores

Graduate applicants need a standardised English test unless they have completed at least 24 US undergraduate credit hours with a 3.0 GPA or 9 US graduate credit hours with a 3.0 GPA. The Graduate School accepts TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo, and scores must be forwarded to the Graduate School by the testing service. Some College of Education applicants can use a Global Teaching Partners rating of B2 or better instead.

Undergraduates can also qualify with a US high school diploma after two years of attendance, a diploma from an exempt country or a B or better in a US college writing course. Neither page gives a validity period or teaching assistant English rule.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.0 and the Graduate School page sets IELTS at 6.5.

If your Duolingo score is below ECU's level

Neither page describes conditional admission or a pathway programme. Undergraduates can switch to SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 450 or ACT English/Writing 19 if those suit them better.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ECU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
