What Duolingo score do you need for East Tennessee State University?

Undergraduates from a listed English-speaking country, or with two semesters of US college English composition at C or better, or one year at a US high school, are exempt. ETSU says it will also accept other nationally recognised, comparable English tests and asks you to contact International Admissions about them.

The page says all students who receive a Graduate Assistantship must take an Oral Proficiency Exam, at no cost, when they arrive on campus. It gives no Duolingo validity period or sending instructions.

For comparison, the same page sets IELTS at 5.5 for undergraduates and 6.5 for graduate students.

The page describes no conditional admission. Undergraduates can use one of the other options it lists, including TOEFL iBT 3.5 (61 before 21 January 2026), PTE 43, Oxford ELLT 6, iTEP Academic 3.6 or ACT 19 in Reading and English.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your ETSU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
