Exemptions

You do not need a test if you had secondary education in English, or completed a bachelor's or master's taught in English (stated on the diploma) in a listed country such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the USA, Switzerland or an EU/EEA country. Distance and offshore-campus degrees do not count. Current degree students at the four partner universities are also exempt.

The page adds that an English-taught bachelor's from elsewhere does not replace the test.

Sending the score

Give the IELTS TRF number or TOEFL registration number in the application. The TOEFL code for Åbo Akademi University is 9880, and for IELTS you should choose Åbo Akademi University for results where possible. The page says no other tests are accepted.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the EDISS Erasmus Mundus master's publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
