University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Erasmus Mundus?

There is no single Erasmus Mundus IELTS score. The European Commission says each joint master's website gives its own entry requirements. The programmes we read range from IELTS 5.5 to 7.0, and some set different scores for different study tracks within one master's. Most applications are made between October and January for the following academic year.Source: Erasmus Mundus official English requirements · checked 31 October 2026

Who sets the requirement

The Erasmus+ page says each master's website lists the participating universities, the entry requirements and the application steps, with and without scholarship, and that in most cases you apply between October and January. The EACEA catalogue lists the programmes and is updated every year.

What to check before you book

Check four things on the programme page: the score for your track, whether IELTS Online or One Skill Retake is accepted, how old the test can be, and whether the result must be in by the application deadline. Several programmes reject applications that do not meet the language rule when submitted.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Erasmus Mundus publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
